Brimstone Hill Fortress
Brimstone Hill Fortress is an exceptionally well-conserved example of both the17th and 18th century military structural design of the Caribbean and was designed by the British and constructed by African slave labour.
The Brimstone Hill Fortress is of cultural, historical and architectural significance to the skills of the British military engineers who designed and supervised it and to the strength, skills and endurance of the African slaves who constructed and maintained it. This fortress is evidence to the African slave trade, European colonial expansion, and the appearance of new societies in the Caribbean.
In some of the architectural features particularly the Citadel are the expressed basics of different stages of its design; it is an epithet of European imperialism, and the appearance of a distinctive Caribbean culture.
The fortress was abandoned in 1853 , the wooden buildings were dismantled and auctioned and the masonry buildings were stolen for their cut stone and natural vegetation . This wonderful region of the world has many fantastic attractions and sites to offer all its visitors and in fact many people who are lucky enough to visit here often go on to purchase there own property here .
